An inspiring performance through 90 minutes was ultimately worth just one point, as Athens Kallithea were denied victory by a stoppage time equalizer in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Panathinaikos at Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium.
AKFC took a deserved lead in the 28th minute when Demethryus attacked from the left wing and picked out Thierry Moutinho for an easy finish, but Panathinaikos were level just four minutes later when Filip Đuričić headed in from a corner kick.
For the rest of the half, AKFC were the dominant side, unleashing 17 first-half shots in total, including a header from Demethryus that was met with a diving save and a shot from Samba Diba that crashed off the post, but the score would remain 1-1 going into half-time.
After the break, the two sides traded major chances, with Panathinaikos’ Bartłomiej Drągowski making another big save on Matej Hanousek and AKFC’s Bernabé making a sliding effort to deny Fotis Ioannidis, until Mathieu Valbuena finally put AKFC back in front, stepping on as a substitute for his club debut and finishing off a brilliant pass from Moutinho in the 80th minute.
But in the 92nd minute, with Panathinaikos desperately throwing everything at goal, Tetê was in the right place at the right time to put in a loose ball from close range.
AKFC would have one final chance through Moutinho on a breakaway, but with the outstanding Drągowski making yet another save, they would have to settle for a draw and just one point.
