Thierry Moutinho joins Athens Kallithea FC

Athens Kallithea FC announce the acquisition of Swiss-Portuguese midfielder Thierry Moutinho on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with relegated Super League 1 club Levadiakos.

Moutinho, 32, has spent the majority of his career in Spain, making 98 total appearances with nine goals in the Segunda División, and has also played in the top divisions of Switzerland, Romania, and Greece.

He is a two-time winner of the Romanian SuperLiga with Cluj, a one-time winner of the Romanian Cup with FCSB, and has achieved top-flight promotions with Servette in Switzerland and Levadiakos in Greece.

Born in Geneva, Moutinho began his career at local side Étoile Carouge FC and soon switched to Servette, the city’s biggest club, making his first team debut by age 18. As a young player typically coming on off the bench, Moutinho was part of a Servette side that earned promotion to the Swiss Super League in 2010/11 and qualified for the UEFA Europa League in 2011/12. He would make 40 total appearances for the club over four-and-a-half seasons, before making the move to Spain.

In January 2013, Moutinho joined Albacete, making 13 appearances with one goal in the second half of the 2013/14 season to help the club return to the Segunda División. He would spend one more season at Albacete, and the next two seasons at Mallorca, with a brief loan at Tenerife. Moutinho had a breakout season for Mallorca in 2016/17, registering four goals and seven assists in 34 league matches.

Though Mallorca fell down to the third tier, Moutinho’s performances earned him a transfer to ambitious Romanian side Cluj, and he would be part of their title-winning teams in 2017/18 and 2018/19. The following summer, Moutinho joined Romania’s biggest club, FCSB, and despite leaving midseason to return to Spain, he would participate in the Bucharest side’s cup-winning run in 2019/20.

After a season and a half back in Spain with Cordoba, Moutinho landed in Greece with Levadiakos, and he would be a key figure in their promotion to Super League 1, making 25 appearances with three goals and three assists in the 2021/22 season. Moutinho made 17 appearances with three goals and one assist in Greece’s top flight last season, but Levadiakos were not able to stave off relegation.

In international football, Moutinho represented Switzerland from the Under-16 to Under-19 levels, and then made a switch to represent Portugal at the Under-20 level.

Welcome, Thierry.
