Athens Kallithea FC announce the acquisition of Venezuelan striker José Romo, 32, following the expiration of his contract with Cypriot side Akritas Chlorakas.
Romo, a 1.95-meter-tall target man, has previously played in Greece with Levadiakos, scoring 11 goals to help the club win promotion to the Super League in 2023/24 and scoring another three goals for the club in the Super League in 2024/25.
Born in Turén in the Venezuelan state of Portuguesa, Romo made his debut in Venezuela’s Primera División at the age of 17 with Llaneros, and in the early phase of his career would score 19 goals in his country’s top division for Llaneros, Deportivo Petare, ACD Lara, and Aragua, along with a loan stint at Rayo Vallecano B in 2015/16.
In August 2018, Romo embarked on a five-year spell in Cyprus, beginning with two consecutive promotions to the Cypriot First Division — scoring 15 goals to help promote Olympiakos Nicosia in 2018/19 and scoring nine goals to help promote Karmiotissa in 2019/20. After scoring 11 goals with six assists for Karmiotissa in his debut season in the Cypriot First Division, Romo earned himself a move to AEK Larnaca, where he contributed five goals with three assists as the club finished in second place and qualified for Europe in 2021/22. The following season, Romo would make one appearance in UEFA Champions League qualifying and one appearance in the UEFA Europa League, and score another two goals for AEK in league play, before a mid-season switch to AEL Limassol.
Romo arrived at Levadiakos in July 2023 and would make an immediate impact, scoring seven goals with one assist during the regular season, followed by four goals in eight matches during the promotion playoffs, as the club won promotion back to the Super League. The following season, Romo would score three goals with one assist in 32 matches (six starts) to help the club maintain their place in the top flight.
Last season, Romo returned to Cyprus, scoring six goals with one assist for Akritas.
Romo is a dual citizen of Venezuela and Spain.
Welcome, José.
