Ioannis Gelios to join Athens Kallithea FC

Athens Kallithea FC have reached an agreement with Greek-German goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios, who will join the club upon the expiration of his contract with Super League 2 club Ionikos on 1 July 2024, subject to the successful completion of a medical.

Gelios, 32, played in the second divisions of Germany and Turkey before arriving in Greece last winter and impressing at Ionikos over the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Born in Augsburg, Gelios came through the academy at FC Augsburg and went on to make 112 total appearances over eight seasons for FC Augsburg II reserves in Germany’s fourth tier while the first team were in the Bundesliga.

After leaving his hometown club, Gelios moved further up the ranks in Germany, making 37 starts (10 clean sheets) for Hansa Rostock in the 3. Liga in 2018/19, followed by 63 total starts (18 total clean sheets) for Holstein Kiel in the 2. Bundesliga from 2019/20 through 2021/22.

Gelios’ next stop was Turkey, where he made 51 starts (15 clean sheets) over a season and a half for second division side Bandirmaspor.

In January 2024, Gelios landed in Greece with Ionikos, making 12 starts (four clean sheets) in the second half of the 2023/24 season, as the club finished third in the promotion race.
